A general contractor is seeking an experienced Electrical Commissioning Engineer on a freelance basis for a six month contract. The role will support the commissioning, testing and handover of electrical systems on a live construction project, working closely with the site team, subcontractors and the client’s representatives to ensure systems are delivered safely, compliantly and in line with the project programme.
Role and Responsibilities
The Electrical Commissioning Engineer will be responsible for planning, managing and executing the commissioning activities for electrical systems across the project. This includes developing and implementing commissioning plans, inspection and test plans, and commissioning schedules in line with project requirements. The role involves witnessing, coordinating and carrying out testing and commissioning of LV and ELV systems, ensuring compliance with specifications, drawings, standards and statutory regulations.
You will coordinate with electrical subcontractors, other discipline commissioning engineers, the construction team and the general contractor’s project management team to ensure commissioning activities are aligned with construction progress. You will identify and manage commissioning risks, resolve technical issues, and support defect rectification through to successful system handover.
The role also includes reviewing and approving method statements, test procedures and commissioning documentation, as well as managing snagging and de-snagging activities. You will be responsible for producing clear commissioning records, test results, reports and as-built documentation, and for supporting final handover to the client, including attendance at demonstrations and training where required.
Health, safety and quality are key aspects of the role. You will ensure all commissioning activities are carried out in accordance with site safety rules, risk assessments and permits to work, and that quality standards are maintained throughout the commissioning process.
Systems Scope
Typical systems may include LV power distribution, lighting and emergency lighting, small power, earthing and bonding, standby power systems, UPS, generators, fire alarm interfaces, and other ELV systems depending on the project scope.
Experience and Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have proven experience as an Electrical Commissioning Engineer on construction projects for a general contractor or main contractor environment. You should have a strong understanding of electrical building services systems and commissioning best practice, with the ability to manage commissioning activities on complex, fast-paced projects.
Relevant technical qualifications in electrical engineering or building services are required, along with a solid working knowledge of applicable standards and regulations. Strong communication skills are essential, as the role involves regular interaction with site teams, subcontractors and client representatives. The ability to work independently, manage priorities and meet programme deadlines is critical. Previous Data Centre experience is neccessary.
